Bisexual flowers :- A flower having both male and female reproductive systems
are called bisexual flowers . Examples:- Lily, Rose, Sunflower, Tulip, Daffodil,
Mustard, Brinjal, Hibiscus, Tomato, Long bean, Chilly, Country bean, Mango
.
Non-essential parts of flowers
Sepals and Petals are called non-essential whorls as they do not directly take
part in reproduction.
Sepals protect the inner delicate whorl during bud condition and also perform
photosynthesis if they are green in colour.
Petals, when they are coloured, attract insects for pollination.
Essential parts of flowers
Essential parts of the flowers such as stamens and carpels help in the sexual
reproduction of plants.
Stamens produces pollen grains containing male gametes and carpels
produces ovules which are female gametes.
The male reproductive part of the flower called as stamen consists
of anther and filament.
Anther produces haploid pollen grains.
The female reproductive part of the flower is called pistil or carpel and
consists of a swollen ovary, long style and terminal stigma.
The stigma receives pollen grains during pollination and support their growth.
The style bears stigma in a suitable position to receive pollen and also
provides passage for the entry of pollen tube. The ovary is the swollen and
hollow basal part that contains ovules. Each ovule has an embryo sac that
bears a haploid egg -the female gamete.
