P. 6
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary & Quaternary Carbon atoms –
Primary Carbon atom-
A carbon atom attached to another C-atom or no other Carbon atom is
0
called primary carbon or 1 carbon.
Secondary Carbon atom-
A carbon atom attached to two other carbon atoms is called secondary
0
carbon atom or 2 Carbon.
Tertiary Carbon atom –
A carbon atom attached to three other carbon atoms is termed as tertiary
0
carbon or 3 Carbon.
Quaternary Carbon atom-
A carbon atom attached to four other carbon atoms is termed as quaternary
0
carbon atom or 4 Carbon.
(The Hydrogen atoms attached to Primary , secondary & tertiary Carbon
atom are correspondingly termed as primary, secondary & tertiary hydrogen
atoms respectively)

• Nomenclature (Naming of organic compounds)–
Organic compounds are found in nature in very large numbers. So its indeed
difficult to name them & remember their names.
