Subtopic- Homologous Series & Nomenclature of hydrocarbon
Lesson Notes
• Homologous Series-
Homologous Series is a series of organic compounds having similar structures
and similar chemical properties, where any two adjacent members differ by a
[-CH2-] group.
These compounds have similar chemical properties due to the presence of
same kind of functional group in all the members of the series.
Homologs-
The members of a Homologous series are known as Homologs.
• Characteristics of Homologous series-
1. All members of a homologous series have the same General formula and the
same functional group.
2. Chemical properties of all the homologs of a series, have similar chemical
properties.
3. Physical properties of the homologs of a series vary gradually with
increase in number of carbon atoms (Atomic Mass).
4. Any two adjacent members of a homologous series, differ by a [-CH2-]
group and a mass of [Mass of C=12 + mass of 2H (2u) = 14u].
