change in space, sequence, and time of crops
In India, the cropping pattern is determined by rainfall, temperature, climate,
technology, and soil type.In order to obtain maximum yields, different patterns of
cropping are practised.
Different cropping patterns are used by farmers in order to increase the crop
yield:
Mixed Cropping
Intercropping
Crop Rotation
Mixed Cropping
It is a cropping pattern in which two or more crops are grown together in the
same field.
This practice minimizes the risk of failure of one of the crops and insures against
crop failure due to abnormal weather conditions.
The crops to be grown together should have a different maturation time and
different water requirements.
For Example, wheat and gram, wheat and mustard, groundnut and sunflower.
Advantages of Mixed Cropping
The crop yield increases.
The pest infestation is minimized.
Reduction in the risk of crop failure.
The soil is utilized properly.
More than one variety of crops can be harvested at the same time.
Intercropping
It is a cropping method in which two or more crops are grown together in a field
but in a specific pattern.
Both the crops use different kinds of fertilizers depending upon their
ownrequirements.
