Les adjectives
French adjectives change to agree in gender and number with the nouns that
they modify.
1. Most French adjectives add ‘e’, there is no difference between the
masculine and feminine forms.
Eg. vert -> verte
2. When the masculine singulier adjective ends with ‘e’, there is no
difference between the masculine and feminine forms.
Eg. rouge -> rouge
3. When the adjectives ends in ‘s’ or ‘x’, there is no difference between the
masculine singulier and plural forms.
Eg. gris -> gris
4. The masculine form of adjectives ending in ‘el’, ‘eil’,’ien’ and ‘et’ will be
in feminine ‘elle’, ‘eille’, ‘ienne’ and ‘ette’ respectively.
Eg. (a) cruel -> cruelle (b) pareil -> pareille
(b) ancien -> ancienne (d) coquet -> coquette
5. The following masculine adjectives will have their feminine form by
doubling their consonants and adding ‘e’.
Masculine Feminine
Bon bonne
Gros grosse
Epais epaisse
Gentil gentille
Bas basse
6. Adjectives that end in ‘er’ or ‘et’ need a grave accent.
Eg. (a) léger -> légère (b) secret -> secrète
(c) premier -> première (d) complet -> complète
