CH- 3 RULING THE COUNTRYSIDE
NOTES
Exploitation of Peasants: The fixed revenue demand burdened
farmers, regardless of crop yield. In years of poor harvest,
peasants were unable to pay taxes, leading to debt and
dispossession.
Neglect of Agricultural Development: Zamindars, assured of
their revenue share, had little incentive to invest in land
improvements or support peasants, resulting in stagnant
agricultural productivity
Inflexibility of Revenue System: The fixed revenue system did
not account for fluctuations in agricultural output or market
prices, placing undue pressure on cultivators during poor
harvests
Loss of Zamindari Rights: Failure to pay the fixed revenue could
result in zamindars losing their rights to the land, leading to
frequent changes in land ownership and administrative
instability
