                  CHAPTER-8: Comparing Quantities Lesson Notes-1

                  SUBTOPICS: RECALLING RATIO AND PERCENTAGE

                   Fraction and Ratios
A fraction represents a part of a whole , which consists of numerators and
                                    3
                  denominators. eg ,
                                    5

Ratio is the comparison between two quantities or comparison of one value to the other
one .General form is a:b –( Read as a is to b)

                   PERCENTAGE: Symbol- %

This is the another way to comparing the quantities. Meaning is per hundred

                  Finding percentage : Example

If there are 7 oranges out of 25 fruits , The comparison can be

                  METHOD 1: Fraction Method

By fraction Method(Equivalent fraction taking denominator 100)
                  7 oranges out of 25 fruits= 7 4 = 28 = 28%
                                                25 4 100
                  METHOD 2 : Unitary method

Out of 25 , no of oranges –7

                  Out of 1 , no of oranges – 7/25

                                                7
                  Out of 100, no of oranges = x 100= 28 oranges
                                                25
We can say there will be 28 oranges out of 100 fruits , which is 28%.

                  So percentage of orange= 28%

                                                                1
