Subtopic- Effects of Force
Effects of Force:
When force is applied on an object it may change its state of motion or shape
of the object or both. Effects of force can be classified into five categories.
Five Effects of Force:
• Object Starts Moving Change in State
• Object Comes to Rest of Motion
• Change in Direction
Apply Force • Change in Speed
• Object is Squeezed
• Object is Elongated
Change in Shape
1.Change in Shape: Applying force can deform an object, changing its shape
or size. Eg, pressing clay to mold it into a pot. Blowing air into a balloon
increases its size and changes its shape.
Change in state of motion
2.Motion to rest: Applying a force opposite to the direction of motion can bring
a moving object to rest. Eg. A goalkeeper stopping a moving ball during a
match. Applying brakes on a bicycle, the bicycle slows down and stops.
3. Rest to motion: Applying a force to a stationary object can set it into motion.
Eg. A closed door begins to move when pushed or pulled. A stationary cart
moves when pulled.
4. Change in direction of motion: Force can alter the direction in which an
object is moving. Eg. Turning a car's steering wheel, changes the car's
direction. Kicking a football sideways, alters the ball's path.
