1. They are generally soluble in water.
2. Salt solutions can conduct electricity.
3. They have high melting point and boiling point.
TYPES OF SALTS:
Salts can be classified into the following types:
1. Neutral salts: A salt formed by a neutralisation reaction between a
strong acid and a strong base OR between a weak acid and a
weak base. The solution of this type of salt is neutral in nature and
does not change the colour of indicators.
For example, Sodium chloride(NaCl), Potassium sulphate(K SO ).

2. Acidic salts: A salt formed by a neutralisation reaction between a
strong acid and a weak base. The solution of this type of salt is
acidic in nature and thus turns blue litmus paper red.
For example, Ammonium chloride(NH Cl)

3. Basic salts: A salt formed by a neutralisation reaction between a
strong base and a weak acid. The solution of this type of salt is
basic in nature and thus turns red litmus paper blue.
For example, Sodium carbonate(Na CO ).

USES OF SALTS:
Salts have a large number of uses in our daily lives:
1. Sodium chloride or common salt is used as a taste enhancer in our
food, as a food preservative and for making soaps.
2. Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is used for baking cakes and
for making aerated drinks.
3. Copper sulphate is used as a fungicide.
