Metamorphic rocks
‘Metamorphic’-comes from the word ‘metamorphism’ which means a change of form.
Metamorphic rocks arise from the changes in the form of existing rock types or pre –existing rocks, in a
process called metamorphism.
The original rocks such as igneous or sedimentary rocks are subjected to high heat, temperature and
pressure conditions, they are change into metamorphic rocks.

Examples of metamorphic rocks-
Marbles:-Limestone, under condition of high temperature and Pressure, changes into marble.
Uses –it is used for making statues, floorings and decorative items.
Gneiss: -Gneiss is formed from Granite. It has different kinds of minerals in it, giving striped appearance
due to light and dark coloured bands.
Uses –it is used as building stone.
Quartzite: -1.It is formed from sandstone that is rich in the mineral quartz.
2. It is a very hard rock and is weather resistant.
Uses –It is used in the glass and ceramic industry, in jewellery and ornaments.
Slate: -slate is obtained from shale. Like shale, it split into flat layers.
Uses- It is used in making bricks and cement.
