SUMMARY:
Humans have forgotten all the favour that trees
have done on them and will continue to do. But,
here, through this poem, the poet voices the
feelings of the trees. Through this poem, the
poet is making an attempt to remind the
humans that we always will be indebted to
trees for our survival. Without a single tree,
humans will die the next second.
Stanza-wise explanation
Stanza 1-The trees in the poem are saying that they have always played an
important role in the progress of human race on earth with their dark and leafy
glade (open space). They have controlled the arrival of seasons. They have built
shady canopies in the hot areas of the earth to give shade to humans.
Stanza 2- The trees say that they have always sacrificed their lives to fulfil man’s
desire and been faithful to humans. They
have born all the pollution generated by the
ungrateful humans in their heart and given
only sweet fruits in return. Humans make
their homes with the help of wood that
they obtain from these trees, and fulfil all
their necessities of firewood, clothing,
medicines, etc.
Stanza 3- The trees say that today man has mastered over the seas and oceans
but they were these trees who accompanied man on their voyage across these
unknown and wild seas. They could only sail the seas because the trees gave them
wood to make boats and ships.
Stanza 4- The trees in the last stanza say that
the human cities have progressed by cutting
forests that have guarded them from storms
and heat. The humans have forgotten the value
of trees. They fail to realise that the global
temperature is rising because they have
destroyed their green cover.
