In 1663, German theologian and
poet Johann Rist gave birth to
Erbauliche Monaths-
Unterredungen (which literally
means Edifying Monthly
Discussions) in which he collated
some scholarly articles and
summaries of new books for the
intellectual masses to read every
month. This was widely considered
to be one of the earliest examples of
a modern magazine. The magazine
lasted for five years and led to the
beginning of similar initiatives in
England, France and Italy.
