SHAPE OF THE EARTH
Learning Objective: Children will be able to know about the shape of the Earth .
•Earlier, it was believed that the Earth was flat. Do you know that Ferdinand Magellan was the first to
prove that the Earth was round in shape.
•In 1522 Ferdinand Magellan and his sailors sailed from Spain on a long voyage on the ship Victoria.
•The ship sailed all the way around the world and reached the same point from where it had started.
This clearly proved that the Earth was round like a ball.
•Though the Earth looks like a ball, it is more like an orange; slightly flat at the top and bottom.
•The top and bottom of the Earth are called poles-the North Pole (at the top) and the South Pole (at the
bottom).
Learning Outcome : Children learnt about the shape of the Earth.
