P. 2
Division by a 1-digit number (with remainder)
Learning Objectives- Students will learn to divide numbers by 1 digit divisor with or without
remainder.
Note: Dividend = Quotient × Divisor + Remainder
When the given number of things cannot be shared equally something is left over. This is
called the remainder.
Example: Divide 97 by 3
Step1: Start with tens. 3 2
Divide 9 tens by 3 ( 9÷ 3 = 3) 3
9 7
Write 3 in tens place of quotient. -9
0 7
Subtract( 9 – 9 = 0)
- 6
Step2: Bring down 7 ones and divide ( 7÷ 3 = 2) 1
Write 2 in the quotient and subtract 7 – 6 = 1
Thus, quotient = 32 and remainder = 1
Checking division : Check whether the division is correct or incorrect.
Dividend =(Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder
= (32 × 3)+ 1
=96 + 1 = 97
It is verified
Thus, the quotient and the remainder are correct.
Example2: Divide 607 by 6 1 0 1
6
6 0 7
Checking division : Check whether the division is correct or incorrect.
-6
Dividend =(Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder 0 0
- 0
=( 6 × 101) + 1
0 7
=606 + 1 = 607 - 6
1
