P. 2
Division by a 1-digit number (without remainder)
Learning Objectives- Students will learn to divide a three and four digit number by a single digit
number.
Note: Dividend = Quotient × Divisor + Remainder
Example: Divide 42 by 2 2 1
Solution: Dividend = 42 ( 4 tens 2 ones) 2
4 2
Divisor = 2 -4
Step1: Divide 4 tens by 2 (4 ÷ 2 = 2)
0 2
Write 2 in the tens place of the quotient and write product
- 2
4 below the dividend in the tens place. 0
Subtract ( 4 – 4 = 0)
Step2: Bring down 2 ones.
2 ÷ 2 = 1
Write 1 in ones place in the quotient and write 2 below the dividend in ones place.
Subtract ( 2 – 2 = 0)
Thus, the answer (quotient) is 21.
Example: Divide 426 by 2 2 1 3
Step1- Divide 4 hundreds by 2. 2 4 2 6
4 ÷ 2 = 2 -4
0 2
Write 2 in the hundred place of the quotient. - 2
Subtract (4 -4 = 0) 0 6
- 6
Step2: Bring down 2. 0
Step3: Divide 2 tens by 2.
2 ÷ 2 = 1, write 1 in the tens place of the quotient.
Subtract (2 -2 =0)
Step4: Bring down 6 ones and divide 6 ones by 2.
6 ÷ 2 = 3, write 3 in ones place of the quotient and subtract 6 – 6 = 0
Thus, the quotient is 213.
Learning outcome: Students are learn to divide a three and four digit number by a single digit
number.
