P. 2
Division as equal distribution and repeated subtraction
Learning Objective-The students will be able to understand the basics of division through repeated
subtraction and equal distribution.
Division is the repeated subtraction of a number and it is shown by a ÷ sign.
Let us subtract 9 from 45 repeatedly until we get zero.
45 - 9 = 36
36 – 9 = 27
27 - 9 = 18
18 - 9 = 9
9 - 9 = 0
Here 9 is subtracted from 45 five times. So we can also write it in division form.
Division fact is 45 ÷ 9 = 5 Where, 45 is called Dividend
9 is called Divisor
5 is called Quotient
Division is also called equal sharing. Let us know how…
Example:If 45 candies are there and we have to share them equally among 9 children,
Each time we will take 9 candies and give 1 to each.
This process we have to repeat 5 times to finish with all the candies.
Each child will get 5 candies.
Thus, we can write 45 ÷ 9 = 5
Learning Outcome- We will ensure that each child understands how to do division using
repeated subtraction and equal distribution.
