P. 2
Multiplication of 2 and 3-digit numbers by a 2-digit number (with regrouping)
Learning Objectives- Students will learn to multiply 2 and 3-digit number by a 2digit number with
regrouping.
Example 1: Multiply 86 by 24 1
Step1: Multiply the number by the one digit. 2
8 6
86 x 4 ones = 344 ones.
× 2 4
Step2: Multiply the number by the tens digit.
1 3 4 4
86 x 2 tens = 172 tens = 1720.
+ 1 7 2 0
Step 3: Add 344 and 1720.
= 2 0 6 4
344 + 1720= 2064
Thus, 86 x24 =2064
1 1
Example 2: Multiply 143 by 46
2 1
Step 1: Multiply the number by the ones digit.
1 4 3
143 x 6 ones = 858 ones.
× 4 6
Step 2: Multiply the number by the tens digit.
1 8 5 8
143 x 4 tens= 572 tens = 5720
+ 5 7 2 0
Step 3: Add 858 and 5720.
= 6 5 7 8
858 + 5720 = 6578.
Thus, 143 x 46 = 6578
LEARNING OUTCOME:
Students are able to understand how to multiply 2 and 3 -digit number by a 2 digit number with
regrouping.
