Page 2 - Lesson Note 3
P. 2
Multiplication by 1-digit number with regrouping
Learning objectives: Students will learn to multiply 2 and 3-digit number by a 1digit number
using column method.
EXAMPLE: Multiply 496 by 5.
Multiply Ones:6 ones x 5 = 30 ones 4 3
Write 0 and carry 3 to thetens place. 4 9 6
Now multiply the tens place. × 5
=2 4 8 0
9 tens x 5= 45 tens
45 tens + 3 tens ( carried)= 48 tens
Write 8 under the tens place and
Carry 4 to the hundreds place.
Now multiply the hundreds place.
4 hundreds x 5 = 20 hundreds
20 hundreds + 4 hundreds ( carried)= 24 hundreds
Write 4 under the hundreds place and 2 in the thousands place.
Thus, 496 x 5 = 2480
Learning outcome: students are able to multiply 2 and 3-digit number by a 1digit number using
column method.
