Subtraction Word problems
Learning objectives: Students will learn to subtract two numbers in story sums using column
method.
A word problem is a few sentences describing a “real life” situation where a problem
needs to be solved by the way of mathematical calculation.
The key words used in problems involving subtraction are: left, take away, difference, decrease,
less than, How many more?
Rules for solving word problems:
Step 1: Read the question properly.
Step 2: Then identify the informative sentences and question sentence.
Step 3: Identify the operation.
Step 4: Frame statements and solve it.
Step 5: Then write the conclusion with statement.
When there is a word problem based on length or distance, then we start the statement like-
“ Length of the….”/ “Distance covered by…” / “Distance travelled by…..” Or “Distance from….”
EXAMPLE: The length of a mango tree is 1340cm and that of a coconut tree is 3910cm. Which
one is taller by how much?
SOLUTION:
Length of a mango tree = 1340cm
Length of a coconut tree = 3910cm
3910 > 1340
Coconut tree is taller than the mango tree
Difference in their heights = 3910cm – 1340cm= 2570
Thus, coconut tree is 2570cm taller than mango tree.
LEARNING OUTCOME: students are able to subtract two numbers in story sums using column
method.
