P. 2
Subtraction with regrouping
Learning objectives: Students will learn to subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers with regrouping
using the column method.
While doing subtraction of 4 digit numbers-
We need to write in column method under the correct place value
Example: Subtract 2685 from 6462
Step 1: subtract ones
13 15
5 3 5 12
2 cannot be subtracted from 5.
6 4 6 2
So, regroup tens into ones.
- 2 6 8 5
6 tens 2 ones = 5 tens 12 ones
= 3 7 7 7
Now, 12 – 5 = 7
Step 2: subtract tens.
8 cannot be subtracted from 5.
So, regroup hundreds into tens.
4 hundreds 5 tens = 3 hundreds 15 tens
Now, 15 – 8 = 7
Step 3: subtract hundreds.
6 cannot be subtracted from 3.
So, regroup thousands into hundreds
6 thousands 3 hundreds = 5 thousands 13 hundreds
Now, 13 hundreds 6 hundreds = 7 hundreds
Step 4: subtract thousands
5 (after regrouping) -2 = 3 thousands
Thus, 6462 – 2685 = 3777
LEARNING OUTCOME: students are able to subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers with regrouping
using the column method.
