Let us take different digit numbers and subtract

 Find the difference between 4772 and 701.

 Th H T O Steps:

4 7 7 2 Ones: 2 – 1 = 1

- 7 0 1 Tens : 7 – 0 = 7

= 4 0 7 1 Hundreds: 7 – 7 = 0

Thousands: Nothing to subtract from 4, so it will simply come down.

Thus, 4772 – 701 = 4071
