Subtraction without regrouping

Learning objectives: Students will learn to subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers by expanding them
into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

Subtraction:Subtraction means taking away some number or object from a group.

 We always subtract a smaller number from a bigger number.
 The bigger number we subtract from is called minuend.

 The smaller number that we subtract is called subtrahend.
 The answer in subtraction is called difference.

                   Minuend _ Subtrahend = Difference

                    9 – 4 = 5

               Subtraction without borrowing

Note: Write the numbers column wise according to the place value. We start subtracting from
               the ones place.

               Example: Subtract 2184 from 3596.

                                            st
               Th H T O 1 step: 6 ones – 4 ones = 2 ones
                                            nd
                  3 5 9 6 2 step: 9 tens – 8 tens = 1 ten
                                            rd
               - 2 1 8 4 3 step: 5 hundreds-1hundred=4hundreds
                                               th
               =1 4 1 2 4 step: 3thousands-2thousands=1thousand

LEARNING OUTCOME: students are able to subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers by expanding them
into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
