P. 2

Point, line, line segment and ray

Learning Objective –Students will learn to understand some simple geometrical concepts.

POINT: A point is an exact position or location on a plane surface. Points are denoted by capital
letters. Here, the dot A is a point.

A point has no length, breadth or thickness.

                                     . A
LINE: A line has no end or beginning.

                                                           X Y

 A line has no end points.

 Since a line extends indefinitely in both the directions, it has no definite length.

We represents a line by XY by XY.

LINE SEGMENT: A line segment is a part of a line.

                                    P Q

 A line segment has two end points.

 It has a definite length but no breadth or thickness.

 We represent a line segment PQ by PQ.

RAY: A line segment extended endlessly in one direction is called a ray.

                            R S

A ray RS has one end point, namely R.

 It has no definite length.

 We represent a ray RS by RS.

Learning outcome: Students are able to understand some simple geometrical concepts.
