Learning objective: Students should be able to identify the major organs of the nervous
system and how it helps us.
Nervous System
Nervous system is a network of organs and nerves sends signals throughout the body. Your
nervous system controls everything you do, including breathing, moving, and smelling.
The brain, spinal cord and nerves together form the nervous system. The brain is present in
the head and is protected by the skull. It controls every action and activity of our body. It is
responsible for our breathing, our heartbeat, and even our thoughts and feelings. It also
controls what we think, how we learn and remember. It is considered to be an important
organ of our body.
The nerves are thread-like tubes that run throughout the body. The nerves act like messenger
carrying messages to and from the brain.
Spinal cord connects the brain to all the body parts through nerves. The backbone protects
the spinal cord from injury. For example, messages carried by the nerves between the sense
organs and the brain help us to hear, see, feel, taste and smell. We have five sense organs –
eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.
Learning outcome: Students identified the major organs of the nervous system and how it
helps us.
