Learning objective: Students will be able to know about different types of feathers and how
birds fly.
FEATHERS OF BIRD
Birds have three different types of feathers and each play an important role to perform.
Different birds have feathers of different colours. The three types are:
1. Flight feathers – The feathers that help a bird to fly are known as flight feathers.
2. Body feathers – They give shape to a bird’s body. New born baby bird has a lot of
down feathers.
3. Down feathers – They are soft and fluffy and keep the bird’s body warm.
HOW BIRDS FLY?
1. Birds fly with the help of their wings. When the bird has to fly, they lift itself up in the
air by flapping its wings.
2. There are two ways in which the wings move:
a. Upstroke – The wings move upward and backward in upstroke.
b. Downstroke – The wings move downward and forward in a downstroke.
3. When the bird has to land, it spreads out its wings and glides down smoothly
without much flapping.
There are some birds that cannot fly. They are called flightless birds.
Learning outcome: Students learnt about the different types of feathers and the flight of a
bird.
