Learning objective: Students will be able to know about the importance of feet and claws
for birds and their types.
Feet and claws of birds
Just like we use our hands to hold and eat our food, birds use their feet and claws to catch
their food. They also use feet and claws to walk, run, hop perch on the trees and to protect
themselves from their enemies. Depending on the different types of feet and claws, the
birds are of different types.
1. Perching birds
They have three toes in the front and one toe at the back which helps them to hold
on to wires and branches firmly. Example: Crow, sparrow
2. Scratching birds
They have strong legs with three toes at the front and one toe in the back. They have
sharp and hard claws which help them in digging the ground to find the insects,
worms and seeds. Ex – Hen
3. Flesh – eating birds
They have strong and sharp claws called talons to catch and hold their prey. Ex –
Eagle
Learning outcome: Students learnt about the different feet and claws of birds and how they
use it.
