Learning objective: Students should recognize the shoot, its types and functions.
SHOOT
The parts of the plant which grow above the ground are called shoot. All the other parts of
the plant, except root, grows from it. Shoot consists of stem, branches, leaves, bud, flower
and fruit.
Big plants like mango, apple, neem and hard woody stem known as trunk and are called as
trees. Whereas plants like cereals and pulses have week stems and are called has herbs.
Shrubs are not big as tree. They have bushy, hard and woody stem. Plants like grapevine and
money plant have thin and weak stem and are called as climbers as they need support of
other plants for climbing up.
Some plants have underground stems which help the plant store the extra food like potato,
ginger, etc.
Functions of stem:
i. Stem keeps the plant upright by providing support.
ii. It carries water and minerals from root to all the parts of the plant and also
distribute the food prepared by the leaves.
iii. It bears leaves, flowers, fruit, buds
iv. It stores food and are edible.
