Learning objective: Students will learn about the classification of various fibre types as plant
natural fibres and animal natural fibres, man-made fibres and its uses.
Fibres
Fibres were discovered when early people realized the need to cover and protect their own
hair and skin from the weather. Fibres used in clothing are used to cover the body, to
protect our body, etc. Everyone wears clothes in different seasons and for different reasons.
Our clothes are made up of different fibres. There are two types of fibres: Natural Fibres
and Man-made fibres.
Natural Fibres: Fibres obtained from plants and animals that can be spun into filament,
thread or rope are termed as ‘Natural fibres.’
• Fibres obtained from plants are called Plant fibres. For example: cotton and jute are
obtained from plants.
o Cotton is used to make cotton clothes that are mainly worn in
summer.
o Jute is used to make ropes, bags, sacs, mats etc.
• Fibres obtained from animals are called Animal fibres. For example: Wool and silk
are obtained from animals.
o We get wool from sheep. Wool is used to make warm clothes worn in winter.
o We get silk from silk worms. Silk is used to make silk sarees, scarf and other
clothes.
Man-made Fibres: Fibres that are made by humans are called man-made fibres. They are
also called as synthetic fibres. For example: Polyester, nylon, rayon are some man-made
fibres. Raincoats, umbrellas are some items made from nylon.
Learning outcome: Students learnt about the various fibre types as plant natural fibres and
animal natural fibres, man-made fibres and its uses.
