P. 2
POSSESSIVE NOUNS
Learning Objective: Children will learn how use apostrophy -s to the nouns to form
possession.
The dolls of Yashni are kept inside the cupboard.
The teddy bear of Akash is on the sofa.
The clothes of mumma are placed on the hangers.
These sentences sound a bit funny, don’t they? Let us rewrite them and read
them again.
Yashni’s dolls are kept inside the cupboard.
Akash’s teddy bear is on the sofa.
Mumma’s clothes are placed on the hangers.
Now these sentences sound so much better!
In the second set of sentences, we use the apostrophe (‘) along with –s after the
noun to show belonging or possession.
In case of plural nouns ending with –s, we use just the
apostrophe (‘) after the s to show possession.
For example, the food of the dogs becomes the dogs’ food.
The legs of the horses become the horses’ legs.
The toys of the children become the children’s toys.
The ( ‘s) can only be used with nouns that name
people and animals. We do not use (‘s ) for non-
living things.
The table’s leg is broken. (incorrect)
The leg of the table is broken. (correct)
Learning Outcome: Children were able to use it in sentences to show possession of nouns.
