Introduction to measuring length (Non- Standard units):
Learning objective: Students will be able to measure the distance and
length of objects using appropriate non-standard units (digit, handspan,
cubit, foot).
• Length means how long an object is.
• In early days body parts were used to measure length. Measuring length
with the help of body parts is Non-standard unit. Example: handspan,
foot, cubit, pace and digit.
• Handspan: It is a measure of distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip
of the little finger with the hand fully extended.
• Cubit: This is a distance from the middle finger to the elbow.
• Digit: Digit is the width of the tip of the first finger.
