LP 6 – Comparison of numbers
Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the place value of each
digit and hence compare numbers using greater than, less than and equal to
symbols.
• We compare two numbers to see which is bigger or smaller. We use the
sign <, > and = for comparing numbers.
• While comparing numbers with more than 1 digit, we start from the digits at
the highest place value and compare them.
• Example :-
(i) Compare 54 and 690
We see that it is a comparison between 2 digits and 3 digits numbers. As
690 is greater than 54, so we will put greater than sign (<) in front of 690.
So 54 < 690
(ii) Compare 239 and 525.
We see that in the hundreds place 2 is less than 5. So 239 is less than
525. We put < sign over here. So 239 < 525.
(iii) Compare 387 and 332.
Here we first see the hundreds place, when the digits are equal then we move
to the next highest place value, we see that 8 is greater than 3. So 387 is
greater than 322 or 387 > 332.
• Example :-(iii) Compare 693 and 693.
We compare the digits at the hundreds place. As both the digits are equal, then
move to the tens place. Again the digits are equal. Then we move to the ones
