Learning objective:The students will be able to learn about the verb (-to
be).
Look at the following verbs:
Am are were Was have
Will be has is had
Do all the verbs show action?
Answer: No. The verbs ‘Am, are, were, was, will be, has, is, have, had’ do
not show any action. These verbs are called helping verbs. Some of these
helping verbs, that is – is, am, are, was, were come from the verb to be.
For example – I am a student.
It was a rainy day.
She is a dancer.
The verbs ‘is’ & ‘was’ are used with a singular noun or pronoun
in a sentence.
For example – He was a doctor.
The zoo was crowded.
The verbs ‘are’ and ‘were’ are used with a plural noun or pronoun and the
singular you in a sentence.
For example – There are beautiful flowers in the garden.
We were in our party dress.
You are my friend.
The verb ‘am’ is used with the pronoun ‘I’.
For example – I am Ricky.
I am an artist.
