Short note
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services like servers, storages and more over the Internet.
The companies that offer these computing services are called cloud providers.
It may be free or they may charge for cloud computing services based on usage.
Based on a cloud location, we can classify cloud as:
• Public
• Private
Based on a service that the cloud is offering, we classify as:
• IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) Ex- servers, VMs
• PaaS(Platform-as-a-Service) Ex- environment for developing, testing, delivering and managing
software applications
• SaaS(Software-as-a-Service) Ex- software applications over the Internet
• FaaS(Functions-as-a-Service), Functions ex. Storage, Database, Information, Process,
Application, Integration, Security, Management, Testing-as-a-service
Here the cloud resources (like servers and storage) are owned and operated by a third-party cloud
service provider and delivered over the Internet. Microsoft Azure is an example of a public cloud. With a
public cloud, all hardware, software and other supporting infrastructure is owned and managed by the
cloud provider.
In a Public Cloud, same hardware, storage and network devices are shared with other organisations or
cloud “tenants.” Account and services of public cloud can be managed using a web browser.
Advantages of public clouds:
Lower costs—no need to purchase hardware or software and you pay only for the service you
use.
No maintenance—your service provider provides the maintenance.
Near-unlimited scalability—on-demand resources are available to meet your business needs.
High reliability—a vast network of servers ensures against failure.
A Private Cloud consists of computing resources used exclusively by one organisation. The private cloud
can be physically located in the organisation or it can be hosted by a third-party service provider.
In a private cloud, the services and infrastructure (both h/w and s/w) are always maintained on a private
network/ organisation. In private cloud it is easier for an organisation to customise its resources to meet
specific IT requirements.
