3) People learn to deal with members of the opposite sex in a socially and
sexually mature way.
4) If the stage is characterised by excessive stress or over-indulgence, it may
cause fixation to an earlier stage of development.
This theory also states that as children proceed through the stages of
development, their view of the world modifies.
If the child fails to pass through any stage successfully, it leads to fixation to
that stage.
Due to fixation, the child‟s development gets arrested at an earlier stage.
This failure may have serious consequences for the child‟s life.
Regression is also an outcome in such situations.
- occurs when a person‟s resolution of problems at
any stage of development is less than adequate.
- takes a person back to an earlier stage.
- people display behaviours typical of a less mature
stage of development.
