The Address

1- A Poignant Tale on the Aftermath of War

The story is a painful account of a girl who goes in search of her mother's belongings after the
second world war in Holland. But, though she realises what she wanted to touch and feel and
remember her mother, she leaves behind everything and reconciles with the reality.
2- Mrs.Dorling's Indifferent attitude towards the author

The narrator knocks at the door of Mrs.Dorling and introduced herself as Mr.S's daughter.
Mrs.Dorling denies knowing her and stared at her without speaking a word. Yet the narrator
gets a glimpse of her mother's knitted cardigan which Mrs.Dorling was wearing. Mrs.Dorling
               shamelessly shuts the door.

3- The Narrator Recalls Her Mother's Words

The narrator walks back to the station recalling what her mother had told her about
Mrs.Dorling's address 46,Marconi Street and how she had taken away all their belongings
through her visits and how her mother was helpless to save everything as they had to leave
               suddenly.

The Narrator's Reflections of Mrs.Dorling& Her Mother's Belongings

Back at the station the narrator remembered the first time when she had met Mrs.Dorling.
Though she had remembered the address for long, initially she hesitated to visit the place as she
thought seeing those belongings would make her nostalgic. But gradually she wished to see and
               get them back.

               2- The Narrator's Visit Again

The narrator decided to visit the address again. This time a young girl opened the door. As she
was led inside, she noticed the candle holder, other belongings kept in a very tasteless manner.
The table cloth, cutlery, the tin place all that belonged to her mother. The young girl cracked a
joke on those antique plates. The narrator found a burn mark on the table cloth.

               3- The Final Resolution

The narrator realised that the objects linked to her memory cannot be taken back. Staying there
was more painful. They had lost their value in the strange surrounding. She comferted herself
that her present house was too small to accommodate them. She resolved to forget and move
               on.
