 Sugar Industry

               Importance:-

India stands second as a world producer of sugar butoccupies the first place in the production of
               gur and
               khandsari..

               Location:-

Sugar mills are ideally located near the fields becausethe raw material is bulky and in haulage
               its sucrose
               content reduces.
 Over 460 mills are spread over U.P, Bihar, Maharashtra,Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, A.P,
Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana andMadhya Pradesh. Sixty percent mills are in U.P and Bihar.
 In recent years there is a tendency for the mills to shift and concentrate in the southern
and western states, especially in Maharashtra. This is because
*the cane produced here has a higher sucrosecontent.
*the moderate climate also ensures a longercrushing season.
*the cooperatives are more successful in thesestates.

               Challenges:-

 The industry is seasonal in nature
 Old and inefficient methods of production
 Transport delay in reaching cane to factories
 The need to maximise the use of baggase.
