Biogas is produced by anaerobic decomposition of the slurry (cow dung + water
mixture) by microbes. This process is applied in a Biogas plant.
The Biogas is stored in the gas tank from which they are drawn through pipes for
use in a Bio-gas plant
Biogas is used for lighting, cooking in the rural areas. While the slurry left behind
is used as excellent manure, rich in nitrogen and phosphorous
The large-scale use of Bio-wastes & sewage material provides a safe and
efficient method of waste-disposal besides supplying energy and manure.
When wood is burnt in a limited supply of oxygen and water until volatile
materials are removed, the residue left behind is charcoal. Charcoal has good
heat generating efficiency. It also burns without flames.
Working of Biogas power plant
In India cow dung, sewage waste, plant matter is decomposed in absence of
oxygen to produce biogas. Since it has cow dung it is often termed as gobar gas.
A biogas plant is a dome-like structure built with bricks where cow dung and
other biowaste are mixed with water to form a slurry and put into a digester.
The digester is a sealed chamber with anaerobic bacteria which breaks down the
slurry.
