• Chemical Properties of NON-METALS:
1.Reaction with Non Metal + O2 → Non Metallic Oxide (Acidic oxide)
Oxygen Non Metallic Oxide + H2O → Corresponding Acid
Example -
1. C + O2 → CO2
CO2 + H2O → H2CO3 (Carbonic Acid)
2. S + O2 → SO2
SO2 + H2O → H2SO3 (Sulphurous Acid)
3. 2S + 3O2 → 2SO3
SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 (Sulphuric Acid)
Exceptions- Some non metallic oxides are neutral in nature-
Examples- CO, H2O, NO (nitric oxide), N2O (nitrous oxide)
2.Reaction with Non Metal + H2O → No reaction
Water Reason- Non metals being electron acceptors, cannot supply the
+
required electrons to reduce H ion of the H2O to form H2 gas.
3. Reaction with (dil) Non Metal + (Dil) Acid → No reaction
Acid Reason- Non metals being electron acceptors, cannot supply the
required electrons to reduce H+ ion of the Acid to form H2 gas.
4. Reaction with Non Metal1 + H2 → Non Metallic Hydride (Stable non metallic
Hydrogen hydrides)
(Combination reaction)
Example-
1. C + 2H2 → CH4
2. N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3
3. O2 + 2H2 → 2H2O
4. Cl2 + H2 → 2HCl
5. 2P + 3H2 → 2PH3
