CHAPTER: Heredity and Evolution
Activity---10
EXPERIMENT: -To study (a) homology and (b) analogy with the help of preserved/ available
specimens of plants and animals.
Materials Required:
Sweet potato, potato, cactus phylloclade, tendrils of pea, Cucurbita and grapes.
Charts showing limbs of frog, lizard, bird human and bat.
How to proceed:
Arrange the above mentioned material as homologous and analogous structures.
(a) Homologous organs
i. Tuber of potato, runner of lawn grass and rhizome of ginger represent a stem.
ii. Potato tuber is a modification of stem for storage of food.
iii. Cactus phylloclade stem is for protection.
iv. Cucurbita tendril provides support.
v. Limbs of frog, lizard, bird and human for locomotion.
(b) Analogous Organs
i. Tuber of potato is a stem but tuber of sweet potato is root. Both help in storing food.
ii. Cucurbita stem tendril provides support. Pea leaflet tendrils also provide support.
iii. Wings of bird, bat and butterfly help in flying.
