 We use simple past tense for finished actions or situations that

               began and ended before now.

 While reading a story or narrating a story or an incident, we use

past tense as it has already occurred or happened.

 The verbs in the simple past tense are used in sentences when we

talk about actions that happened in the past.

Example—He fell down on the ground.

                                    I ate mangoes.

 To change a verb from present tense to past tense e mostly

add ‘ed’ at the end of the word

                      Ex: play – played

                             Jump – jumped

                             Clap – clapped

                             Hop - hopped

In clap and jog and similar other words where the word has a
vowel before the ending letter, we write double last letters.

                    Some verbs change completely
                      Ex: sleep – slept

                             eat – ate
                             drink – drank

                            give – gave

 Some verbs don’t change when used in present or past tense.
