                Upanishads means sitting down near the gurus under a tree.
                It was written as an answer to several philosophical questions.
                It is a text recorded in the form of dialogues.
                Most upanishadic thinkers were Brahmins and sages.
                One famous women thinker, Gargi is also remembered for her contribution.

                This religion was widely spread by the last and 24  Tirthankara,
                  Vardhamana Mahavira.
                He belonged to the Vajji sangha.
                Can be categorised into 2 types- Digambaras and Shwetambaras.
                He followed a simple doctrine- ‘men and women must leave their homes to
                  who wished to know the truth’.
                  Ahimsa or non-violence to be followed.
                Followers were called Jainas.
                        Had to observe celibacy
                        Not stealing
                        Non violence
                        Do not tell a lie
                Spread to different parts of north India, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka.
