CH 2- FROM HUNTING- GATHERING TO GROWING FOOD
               NOTES-

SUB TOPIC- A NEW WAY OF LIFE; STORING ANIMALS

 When people started growing crops, they had to stay in one place for a long
                       time:
 To look after the plants for watering and weeding
                    To ripening of grains
 For storing of crops in clay pots.
 Animals were used for various purposes like milk, meat, etc. In this way
animals were also used as a store of food.
SUB TOPIC- FINDING OUT ABOUT FIRST FARMERS AND HERDERS

 Scientists have found evidences of plants and animal bones which reflect that
a particular site was inhabited by farmers and herders.
 Remains of burnt grain have also been found which signify that people started
                       growing crops.
SUB TOPIC- TOWARDS A SETTLED LIFE

                   1. Archaeologists have found traces of many things as mentioned

below. They have used these things to know how the ancient people
lived, what did the ancient people eat etc.,

 Traces of huts at some sites: For example, in Burzahom (in

Kashmir) people-built pit-houses, which were dug into the

ground, with steps leading into them. These houses may have

                              provided shelter in cold weather.
 Cooking hearths: Cooking places were found both inside and

outside the huts, which suggests that, depending on the

weather, people could cook food either indoors or outdoors.

 Neolithic tools: Included polished stone tools to give cutting

edge and mortar pistils used for grinding grains. Along with

these Neolithic tools, even the tolls of Palaeolithic age were
                              still used.

                   2. Though some people have adapted to farming herding, in many

areas people still continued to hunt and gather food. This suggests
