measuring and comparing line segments
Introduction:
All the shapes we see around us are formed using curves or lines.
We organize them into line segments, angles, triangles, polygons and circles.
We find that they have different sizes and measures. Let us now try to develop
tools to compare their sizes.
Comparison of length by observation:
In this method we just look at the lengths of the given line segments and compare in our
mind whether they are of equal length, one is bigger than the other or smaller.
But we cannot always be sure of our judgement.
Therefore this method of comparison is not used for accuracy.
Comparison of length by using a ruler:
To measure a line segment by using a ruler.
One edge of a ruler is marked in centimetres (cm).
Each cm is divided into 10 equal small divisions, called millimetres (mm).
