A Glimpse into History
• The study of shadows dates back to Ancient Greek times.
• Eratosthenes (276–194 BC) measured the Earth’s circumference using
shadows!
• Sundials used by ancient civilizations measured time using the shadows of
the Sun.
Interactive activities:
Shadow Length Challenge
Objective: To observe how the length and direction of a shadow change during
the day.
Materials Needed: A chalk or marker, a flat open ground (like a playground), a stick
or your own body, a measuring tape or scale, a notebook, and a pencil to record
data
Process:-
1. Go outside in the morning (e.g., 8:00
AM).
2. Stand upright or place a stick vertically in
the ground.
3. Use chalk to trace the shadow's tip on
the ground.
4. Measure the length of the shadow with a
measuring tape.
5. Note the time and length in your notebook.
6. Repeat the same steps at:
o Noon (around 12:00 PM)
o Evening (around 4:00 PM or later)
7. Compare the lengths and directions of the shadow.
