P. 2

A Glimpse into History
                   • The study of shadows dates back to Ancient Greek times.
                   • Eratosthenes (276–194 BC) measured the Earth’s circumference using
                       shadows!
                   • Sundials used by ancient civilizations measured time using the shadows of
                       the Sun.

               Shadow Length Challenge

Objective: To observe how the length and direction of a shadow change during
               the day.

Materials Needed: A chalk or marker, a flat open ground (like a playground), a stick
or your own body, a measuring tape or scale, a notebook, and a pencil to record
               data

               Process:-

                   1. Go outside in the morning (e.g., 8:00
                       AM).
                   2. Stand upright or place a stick vertically in
                       the ground.
                   3. Use chalk to trace the shadow's tip on
                       the ground.
                   4. Measure the length of the shadow with a
                       measuring tape.
                   5. Note the time and length in your notebook.
                   6. Repeat the same steps at:
                          o Noon (around 12:00 PM)
o Evening (around 4:00 PM or later)
                   7. Compare the lengths and directions of the shadow.
