  The expansion is due to the increased spaces between the particles.

                     The particles in the solids vibrate more when it is heated and thus, resulting in

                      expansion.
                     On cooling, the particles of a substance come back to their original state.

            2.  Application of Contraction and Expansion in Liquids:
                     When the liquid is heated, the particles gain more energy and move rapidly or

                      vigorously.

                     The movement overcome the forces of attraction between the particles, allowing
                      them to move freely, thus, increasing the volume.

                     On cooling, the particles come back to their original positions.
            3.  Application of Contraction and Expansion in gases:

                     Similarly, in the case of gases, on getting heated, they absorb a lot more energy,

                      and the inter-particle distances increase.
                     At lower temperatures, the particles reduce their movement as they low energy

                      and the volume is decreased.
