P. 2
The expansion is due to the increased spaces between the particles.
The particles in the solids vibrate more when it is heated and thus, resulting in
expansion.
On cooling, the particles of a substance come back to their original state.
2. Application of Contraction and Expansion in Liquids:
When the liquid is heated, the particles gain more energy and move rapidly or
vigorously.
The movement overcome the forces of attraction between the particles, allowing
them to move freely, thus, increasing the volume.
On cooling, the particles come back to their original positions.
3. Application of Contraction and Expansion in gases:
Similarly, in the case of gases, on getting heated, they absorb a lot more energy,
and the inter-particle distances increase.
At lower temperatures, the particles reduce their movement as they low energy
and the volume is decreased.
