LESSON NOTES
Soluble and Insoluble Substances
Substances that dissolve in a liquid are known as soluble substances.
Example: salt, sugar, copper sulphate
Substances that do not dissolve in a liquid are known as insoluble substances.
Example: sand, gravel, chalk.
Solvent: A solvent is a substance, generally a liquid, in which other materials dissolve.
For example, water.
Solute: A solute is a substance that is dissolved in a solvent to form a solution. For
example, sugar.
Solution: A mixture of the solute and solvent forms the solution. For example, sugar
dissolves in water to form sugar solution.
Solubility: The ability of a substance to dissolve in water to form a solution is called the
solubility of that substance in water.
The solubility of solids in liquids generally increase with increase in temperature and
with stirring.
Saturated solution: A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute in it is called a
saturated solution.
Unsaturated solution: An unsaturated solution is one which can dissolve more solute
at a particular temperature.
WATER- A UNIVERSAL SOLVENT
Water is known as the Universal Solvent because it is capable of dissolving a variety of
different substances.
This property of water is very important for every living organism on earth.
