Winnowing is the method of separating lighter particles
from heavier particles with the help of wind. In this
               method

                   (i) The mixture is allowed to fall from a small
                           height.
(ii) The heavier particles fall down forming a heap.
(iii) The lighter particles are blown away by the
wind and are collected further away.

Example: Farmers use winnowing to separate grains(heavier) from the husk(lighter).

               Sieving

Sieving is the method of separating components of different sizes in a
mixture using a sieve. In this method,

                   (i) The pores in the sieve allow smaller components of the mixture
to pass through and retain the larger ones.
(ii) Different sieves can be chosen according to the sizes of the
                          components of the mixture.

Examples: To separate bran from wheat flour at home, to separate gravels from sand.

               Magnetic separation

Magnetic separation is a method of separating components which are
magnetic in nature from non-magnetic components using a magnet.
               This can be used when

                   (i) One of the components of a mixture is magnetic in nature.

Examples: A magnet is used to separate iron nails from sand.
