Lesson Notes
Movement:
• Movement is an important feature of living organisms.
• Movement could be external movement or internal movement.
• This may or may not involve a change in the position of an organism.
• Animals exhibit locomotion while plants show movement.
• Animals can move from one place to another called locomotion.
• Leaves of plants like Mimosa pudica droop when touched it is an external
movement.
• Non-living things do not move on their own.
Food and Nutrition:
• All living organisms need food to survive.
• Food gives them energy for growth, development and to perform day to day
activities.
• Plants are autotrophs and can prepare their own food by photosynthesis.
• Animals are heterotrophs and depend on other plants and animals for
their nutrition.
• Non-living things do not need or eat food.
Respiration:
• The food we eat reacts with oxygen of the air we breathe in to release energy. This
process is called respiration.
• The energy is utilised by the living organisms for doing various activities.
• Organs of breathing-
❖ Land animals breathe through nostrils.
❖ Aquatic animals breathe through gills.
❖ Insects breathe through spiracles.
❖ Earthworm breathes through their moist skin.
• Plants too respire.
• Exchange of gases occurs through stomata.
• During respiration, the plants take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
• During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.
• During daytime, the rate of photosynthesis is higher than the rate of respiration.
• Roots and older stems breathe through minute holes called lenticels.
