Topic-The Living and the Non-Living
Subtopic- Structural Organisation, Growth
Lesson Notes
Structural organisation:
• All living organisms are made up of cells.
• Cell divide further to form new cells.
• A cell is the basic building block of all living organisms.
• Living organisms are either unicellular or multicellular.
• Organisms made up of only one cell are called unicellular organisms.
Example- Amoeba, paramecium, bacteria, etc.
• Organisms made up of more than one cell are called multi cellular organisms. Example-
Man, dogs, mango tree, etc.
Growth
• All living organisms grow.
• Growth is increase in size and volume of the body.
• Living organisms grow and growth is the result of internal division of cells or increase in
the size of cells.
• Animals stop growing after sometime. Their body however undergoes a series of
development and becomes mature.
• Plants grow throughout their life.
• Non-living things do not grow but may show increase in size or volume due to the
addition of material from outside.
Wonder box
• Robert Hooke discovered cell in 1665.
• He is well known for his book Micrographia.
• He coined the term - ‘CELL’.
