Fats
Fats are energy giving food. A gram of fat releases twice the energy released by the
same quantity of carbohydrates or proteins.
Food rich in fats
Fats are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Fats form a layer under the skin and provide us warmth.
Fatty tissues around certain organs, such as eyes and kidneys, offer
protection to these organs by acting as shock absorbers.
Eating too much of fat-rich food can make us overweight and eventually lead
to obesity.
Consumption of excess fat can cause deposition of a chemical called
cholesterol in our arteries and make the flow of blood in arteries difficult and
may even lead to heart attack and other heart diseases.
Sources of fats:
Fats are obtained from both animal and plant sources.
Fats from animal sources are butter, ghee, meat and eggs.
Fats from plant sources are vegetable oils (groundnut oil, coconut oil etc.)
and nuts.
